International standards & guidelines

  • ISO/IEC 21964: An international standard for the secure destruction of data storage media, based on the German DIN 66399.
  • NSA/CSS 9-12: The "Storage Device Sanitization Manual" describes procedures, methods, and devices for the secure destruction of storage media containing confidential data. It also refers to the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List (EPLs), which lists approved devices for the destruction of paper, hard drives, SSDs, and optical media.
  • NATO classifications: A four-level classification system for confidential information: NATO Restricted, NATO Confidential, NATO Secret, and COSMIC TOP SECRET. These classifications determine the level of protection required and the rules for disclosure to safeguard national interests.
  • Common Criteria (CC) ISO/IEC 15408: One of the most comprehensive and complex standards addressing product safety. Common Criteria certification is a globally recognized verification of a product's safety properties.
International

EU and German Legal Basis

  • GDPR: The General Data Protection Regulation is the European Union's basic data protection regulation, which regulates the protection of personal data of EU citizens.
  • DIN 66399: A German standard that describes the requirements and security levels for the destruction of data on various storage media (paper, CDs, hard drives, etc.).
  • BDSG: The Federal Data Protection Act is the German national data protection law that regulates the processing of personal data in Germany and supplements the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • IT Security Act / KRITIS Regulation: Critical infrastructures (KRITIS) are organizations and facilities of vital importance to the public sector, the failure or impairment of which would result in lasting supply bottlenecks, significant disruptions to public safety, or other dramatic consequences. The BSI-Kritis Regulation regulates KRITIS sectors in Germany and the NIS-2 Directive at EU level.
  • Archive Acts: Regulates who is responsible for archiving documents, the criteria according to which this is done, the conditions under which records may be accessed and how the management of historical holdings is organized.

Media shredders and granulators

In the government and military sectors, the secure destruction of digital media is essential to protect highly confidential information. Intimus offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-performance industrial media shredders and granulators that meet even the highest security requirements. The granulators, with their interchangeable screens, allow for flexible adjustment of security levels up to E-5 for electronic data storage devices and H-6 for hard drives – thus meeting the most stringent international standards. Degausser and Crusher

Where the protection of sensitive data is of utmost importance, degaussing is the most secure method for completely and irreversibly erasing information on magnetic storage media such as HDDs. The stored data is completely removed using an extremely strong magnetic field – a process that makes even the most modern data recovery impossible. To provide physical proof of unusability, a crusher is then used: It deforms, punches, and breaks the data media. This combination of magnetic and physical destruction complies with the NSA's leading security standard – a maximum level of security for handling highly confidential and secret information on magnetic storage media.

A government logistics center faced the challenge of reliably and traceably destroying sensitive digital data storage devices. After carefully evaluating various options, the company opted for a combination system consisting of a degausser and hard drive shredder from intimus.

The decisive factors were compliance with international security standards including NSA/CSS specifications and ISO/IEC 21964, and the ability to document each destruction process in an audit-proof manner.

The robustness and reliable operation of the devices were particularly praised. Even after intensive use over extended periods, the technology proved to be stable.

Warships process highly sensitive mission data that must be destroyed with absolute certainty. Transporting drives ashore is risky, and space for equipment on board is limited.

The navy deployed the intimus SSD-HDD Granulator directly on board. Compact and robust, with interchangeable screens, it ensures the destruction of HDDs and SSDs in accordance with ISO/IEC 21964 (DIN 66399) up to security levels H-5 and E-5. Two separate feed chambers with optimised blade geometry ensure efficient processing and save up to 65% space compared to separate devices.

Sensitive data is destroyed immediately without leaving the ship – quickly, reliably and absolutely securely. 

Marine

A national intelligence service required a solution for the secure destruction of documents classified as ‘TOP SECRET’. According to regulations, this must be done in accordance with ISO/IEC 21964, security level P-7, to ensure that the information cannot be recovered.

The service utilises the high-security shredder intimus 007. This system shreds paper into particles smaller than 5 mm², thereby fully complying with P-7 requirements. 

The intimus 007 has been a leading high-security solution since 1975, enabling the irreversible destruction of state secrets directly on site and combining maximum data security with operational efficiency.
