Does your organization contract with shred trucks or other third party document destruction solutions?
Many of our clients have been long-time customers of mobile shredding services, which offer a convenient means of quickly disposing of documents and other media. However, do you know how secure their disposal methods are?
Many shred trucks utilize the NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) shred standard. The NAID standard specifies that 8.5” x 11” (21.6cm x 28cm) A4 paper should be shredded into 49 strips of paper measuring ¾” x 2 ½” (1.9cm x 6.4cm), with a surface area of 1.9 square inches (1210 sq. mm).

Paper strips of this size allow for easy reconstruction, and are large enough to allow data to be gleaned without reconstruction. For perspective, 49-piece puzzles of a similar size are commonly marketed to children 4 to 5 years of age, who are able to solve these puzzles with minimal difficulty.
While this might be sufficient for the lowest-risk documents, this standard is entirely unacceptable for any documents containing personally identifiable information, financial or medical data, and other sensitive materials. If you are currently using a shred truck or other third-party solution, it is imperative that you act to secure your data.
TAKE CONTROL:
SAFELY RECYCLE THE SHREDDINGS PRODUCED BY YOUR XL SERIES SHREDDER, AND START GENERATING A PROFIT WITH YOUR DATA DISPOSAL!
We recently worked with a major metropolitan library that was paying $30,000 per month to a local shred truck company. They contacted intimus, and we set them up with one of our heavy duty XL Series Media Shredder systems.
They then made arrangements to with a local paper recycling company, and rather than paying $30,000 per month to dispose of their documents, they instead generated $5,000 in profit every month by recycling their shreddings.
This arrangement is also a key way of choosing where your shredded documents end up. Does your shred truck service disclose where your shreddings end up? Many such companies sell shreddings to companies in China or elsewhere, creating potentially perilous security issues for your clients’ data.
By performing your shredding in-house, you can choose to contract with a recycler or other disposal service that conforms to your needs and preferences--a consideration that is especially important for organizations looking to ‘go green.’

The XL Series Industrial system is an easy to use, secure shred solution that can help you secure your data.
The XL Series is a heavy-duty shredding system for professionally disposing of sensitive data. It is the ideal solution for secure destruction of paper documents and complete ring binders, lever arch files, boxes, tape media, and much more. The robust, high capacity cutting units, optimized and powerful drives, and fully automatic function control provide for automated destruction of enormous amounts of whole files, computer printout lists, writing paper, and other high security materials, with minimal personnel expenses.
A variety of optional equipment is available to adapt the XL Series to your individual specifications and structural realities at the installation and operation area. The hopper of the standard feeding conveyor belt can be filled with hundreds of pounds of paper and other media, which is processed by the system nearly independently. The rising conveyor with a maximum 33° angle of gradient feeds the material directly to the hopper of the primary shredder. The drive unit is located at the lower drum for easy access. The central controlling unit of the shredder provides automatic monitoring of the conveyor belt.
The primary shredder is equipped with a powerful electric-powered geared drive designed to cope with thick stacks of paper. The cutting shafts with specially designed hardened tool steel cutters provide high throughput and effective shredding. The main servicing points are allocated at two easily accessible spots.

The XL Series Shredder can be equipped with a ferrous magnetic separator, which allows for the destruction of complete ring binders. (XLM)
Ferrous-magnetic metal parts, such as the rings commonly found in ring binders, no longer need to be manually removed prior to shredding. They are extracted by the magnet separator during operation, protecting the secondary shredder and increase the lifetime of the cutting block. This separation of materials also allows for easier recycling.
For easy servicing, all sheet steel covers are equipped with quick release fasteners. The solid steel tube framework is equipped with detachable traverses, which enable convenient transportation of the whole system with an overhead crane, forklift truck, or two commercial pallet trucks. 6 height adjustable feet provide for level installation of the machine on uneven ground. The rubber underlay minimizes transfer of resonances into the building.
All functions are controlled automatically by the integrated Siemens S7 1200 series PLC. Operating states and error messages are clearly shown in plaintext via a separate 6” (152mm) Siemens KTP 600 colour TFT display in the control cabinet. Start and stop timing of all components can be adapted to individual requirements.
CEKON-connection and monitoring for the feeding conveyor, dust extractor and consecutive machines, such as a delivery conveyor belt or baling press can be ordered as extra cost options or easily integrated later on. The fully automatic shredding process is controlled with simple “start” and “stop” buttons, providing for simple operation which requires minimal training.
Choose the XL Series Shredder with the level of security that is right for your data disposal needs.
The XL Series line of shredders conform to the DIN 66399 shredder standard, with individual models meeting the P-2 through P-5 Security Levels:
P-2:
Strips no wider than 0.24” (6 mm), or particles no larger than 1.24 square inches (800 sm. mm)
P-3:
Strips no wider than 0.08” (2 mm), or particles no larger than 0.5 square inches (320 sq. mm)
P-4:
Particles no larger than 0.25 square inches (160 sq. mm), with strips no wider than 0.24” (6 mm)
P-5:
Particles no larger than 0.05 square inches (30 sq. mm), with strips no wider than 0.08” (2 mm)
